CASTELLO BANFIThe Castello Banfi legacy began in the 19th century with their great great aunt Teodolinda Banfi, head of household for scholarly Pope Pius XI. She taught the family that wine is one of nature’s most wholesome foods and cherised gifts. At Castello Banfi, known in the 13th century as Poggio alle Mura, they fashioned a constellation of vineyards, using pioneer technology rather than chemicals, to preserve the true sustainable nature of their vines. Through the endeavours and foresight of the Marianis, Castello Banfi has become one of Tuscany’s premium vineyard estates. John and Harry Mariani inherited their love and knowledge of fine wines from their father Giovanni, who established a wine importing firm in New York in 1919. Although born in Connecticut, Giovanni spent a decade of his early life (1904-1914) studying in Milan while living with his aunt, Teodolinda Banfi. The family tradition continues today with James Mariani, son of Harry and John’s daughter Cristina Mariani May. |
